I was just released from the hospital yesterday after having an emergency heart catheterization at age 43. I had to say goodbye to my 2 small sobbing children this week (thinking I might possibly never see them again.) While waiting for surgery, I only had time to write down a few brief notes to my little boy and girl and husband about the things I wanted them to know in case I did not make it. I wept over tear-stained pages for my children who would have no mother, and my husband who would have no wife. I wept over all the things I had wanted to accomplish in my life and all the things I had wanted to share with my kids. I was heartbroken that I had failed my children. They needed a mother to protect them, care for them and love them and I had failed them. My anguish was beyond anything I have ever experienced. I prayed for their futures and for my own peace of mind as the hours ticked away before my surgery. Finding a well of stillness and peace within my grief, I went into the operating room calm and resigned to whatever happened.

I have no words for the relief and resolve I am experiencing now that I survived the procedure and live to tell of my experience. I know that I now have absolutely no choice but to fight for my life every single day of the time that remains. This is my one wild and precious life and it is worth fighting for.

There were literally hundreds of heart patients lined up at the hospital, and thousands more scheduled on into the future waiting for surgery to save their lives. The feeling of resignation and stubborn disregard hung in the air over the cardiac unit like a dense fog. Perhaps because every patient I saw was old enough to be my parent or grandparent, I just got so incredibly angry at myself for having ended up in that situation, despite major strikes against me in hereditary congenital heart problems. Each new doctor, technician or aide who came to treat me seemed shocked to see me there. In the cardiac cath lab, they literally said, "What are YOU doing here?" I had a lot of explaining to do, mainly to myself. The fact that the surgeon said I was a victim of my heredity did little to assuage my anguish. When had I given up and stopped trying to fight?

I am on a journey now. A lifelong journey, not of dieting and counting calories, but of making moment-to-moment choices that will directly affect the quality and QUANTITY of the rest of my life. The heart condition that put me in the emergency room this week can be controlled by medication and will not require surgery only IF I do my part in saving my own life. I am the active catalyst here, not medical intervention. It is my life to save, my heart to heal. I am taking matters into my strong and capable hands. I have been through some major trials in my life and come out of them stronger, and I will master this too. I must.

Consider the alternative to not trying... There is nothing like facing death to make you value your life.

My advice to anyone struggling to get healthy-
Do not give up. Fight for your life. Every effort you contribute is worth it. Keep going. Keep moving forward. Fall ten times, stand up eleven. Moment to moment choices are what determine your fate. Keep trying. It WILL work and you WILL succeed. Please give yourself another chance. It's never too late.

I have many pounds still to lose and much work to do to exercise my heart back to life, but I cannot give up. I have too much to live for.

I would very much like to have your help and encouragement on this journey of mine if you will be a positive source of energy and support.

Oh Mary, this is precisely how I am feeling right now. I know I should be doing things, moving forward, pressing on, but I don't want to sell my life for money, even though I have people offering all the time to buy and sell me and this work I do. Sure, I would like to be compensated for my contribution and make a viable living from my art, but I am honestly done with selling myself to get there. The selling blurs my focus and I would rather keep my eyes on my art.

I just want to be and to create and to not think about any of the rest of it. I'd like to ask the universe for someone to manage all of it for me so I can go out in the world and do what I do best.

Target Gallery joins the photography madness of FotoWeek DC

Target Gallery is excited to participate in FotoWeek DC by offering an exhibition, lecture and workshop geared towards photography enthusiasts everywhere. 5x5 Exposed, a small works photography exhibition, opens to the public on November 6 and runs through November 21. We will have a reception to meet the artists and listen to a gallery talk by our juror, photography expert and gallery owner, Kathleen Ewing on November 11, 6-8pm. Ewing will speak at 7pm.

5x5 Exposed brings 46 photographers from across the country and around the world to exhibit in the gallery. Out of the 46 photographers, two are international artists from Iceland and Australia. The remaining 44 are from around the country with 17 of the artists from the DC metro area. The photography chosen for the exhibit does not exceed 5 inches in any direction inclusive of frame. This created a challenge for many photographers who would not normally work on such a small scale.

Wide Awake Dreaming

My piece "Clairvoyant" was just selected for Vermont Photography Workplace "Wide Awake Dreaming" exhibition catalogue and online gallery annex for the upcoming show.

Exhibition dates: Nov. 2nd through Nov. 24th
Opening Reception: Nov. 5th, 5-7 pm.

Dreams and fantasies often seem like the terrain of stories and poems, rather than the literal lens of the camera. However, from the early days of the medium to the present, the capacity of the photograph to suggest, as well as to state, has preoccupied visionary photographers. For “Wide-Awake Dreaming” exactly 1000 photographs were submitted by 187 photographers that conjured up states of mind, memories, emotions, metaphors, and the surreal through their subjects and style.

Juror Russell Joslin selected forty photographs for exhibition on the walls of PhotoPlace Gallery Nov. 2nd through Nov. 24th and on the gallery website. He then chose an additional thirty-five images for PhotoPlace's "On-Line Gallery Annex."

Don't know whether to be pleased to be included online or discouraged because I'm not on the gallery wall, but at any rate, Russell Joslin of "Shots Magazine" knows a thing or two about photography so there's something.

IPA - Protecting Style: When Imitation is not Flattery

We have all heard the quote; "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" and while that MAY be a boon to your ego, have you ever had someone imitate you and your unique creative style? If you are a contemporary artist whose image are available on the internet today, chances are you have been copied, and copied...poorly. So, if imitation is the highest form of flattery, how come it doesn't feel very flattering to see your style so botched and butchered by amateurs? How come it makes me want to punch a whole pack of sad, grasping knock-off artists ? Ah, but I digress, aggressively... I'm a lover, not a fighter. But then again, I am willing to fight for what I love. And I LOVE what I create.

I have been creating innovative new series of photo-montage works for over a decade, layering my original photography with textures from my paintings, drawings and collected ephemera. I create new work nearly every single day of my life, featuring the things I see and feel throughout the course of my days. I create work from my heart, sharing with you my ups and downs, my triumphs and my tragedies. I have been posting my latest creations in my visual journal on Flickr since 2005. In that time I noticed that many imitators purporting to be "friends" would subsequently copy whatever it was I was creating on a pathetically consistent basis.

One week, I would shoot trees, the next week, they would shoot trees. Not just any trees, but from the same exact angles, the same exact colors and textures. Then I would do a floral series, bam- they would do a floral series. Same flowers. Same colors. In 2008, I created my textured carnival pieces- instant carnival copies from them, clumsy as they were. Same angles, same ideas, though clearly not the same skills and completely devoid of soul. It got to the point of being utterly absurd and frankly, illegal. Interestingly enough, though they tried to copy my technique down to the most minute detail, the results were heavy-handed and crude. If it wasn't so pathetic, I would find myself laughing about it. I'm not laughing anymore. I am taking names. And reporting them to my attorney.

People with no original ideas of their own simply observe an idea, think it's easy and copy it to try to scratch and scramble ahead. Little do they know that there are many subtle fine details that went into the creation that will render the copy a failure due to lack of finesse and more importantly, lack of heart and soul. Those who copy from others without the skills to create anything dynamic and new on their own are lazy, so they steal ideas and imitate successful artists rather than innovate and create from their own experience. This assures that their final product comes out as soulless and empty as they are. While riding on the backs of real creators may get them ahead for a short time, this theft of intellectual property inevitably leads to professional failure and personal emptiness. Perhaps more critically, the outright theft of a living, vibrant creative idea generates the kind of BAD KARMA that can haunt a person for the rest of their life.

What you put out into the world always comes back to you, whether good or bad. You'll see.

Discover Your Passion: Do What You Love And The Money Will Follow

"Do what you love and the money will follow"

You’ve heard this cute advice a hundred times: Do what you love and the money will follow. If you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work. But what if you have no idea what your passion is?

It’s time you find out.

In real estate, there’s a concept called “highest and best use” (HABU). Properties are valued based on the best use of the land that will produce the highest value. For example, appraisers may value a two-bedroom house on a busy street next to retail shops as if a strip mall occupied the land, because the best use of the property that produces the highest value is a strip mall and not a house. In other words, other two-bedroom houses in the town might be worth $200,000, but an investor may pay $600,000 just for the land in order to build a strip-mall.

When you use the other 8 hours to create, you must focus on your HABU — your unique talents, skills, and experience that produce the most value. The dead weight that so many people drag around with them is their feeling of unfulfillment at work. Part of the reason for this lethargy is that most people feel underutilized and don’t have the flexibility to do what they do best. We get boxed into positions and job descriptions that we can do adequately, but usually don’t tap into our core strengths.

This is why creating during the other 8 hours is so much fun. You create your own job description. You are your own boss and you can focus on what it is you enjoy the most and do the best. You might not be performing at HABU during your working hours, but in order to maximize your chance for success during the other 8 hours, you need to focus on projects that use your best and most unique talents. Duh, right? I wish it were so obvious.

Over and over and over again, I see people starting businesses and getting engaged in projects that are so completely outside of their best use. They focus exclusively on what will provide them the “highest” value-that is, those projects that look like they’ll make them the most money — but they don’t first consider what their personal “best use” is. I’ve seen guys who can’t set the time on their VCR (I guess I’m dating myself) try to start technology companies. I’ve seen others who can’t balance their checkbook try to start finance companies. I’ve seen somebody try to launch a video game application who had no gaming experience (and in fact, didn’t even like games).

And guess what? All those ventures failed. Why? You have to be passionate about what you’re doing or you’ll give up after the first setback. The more you love what you do the more you will persevere. Also, when you capitalize on your unique qualities and gifts, you’re making it easier on yourself. If you start something you’re halfway into or that doesn’t capture your talents, you’re making it much harder to succeed.

Exercise: How to Discover Your Passion

So what’s your highest and best use? Here’s a simple exercise you can do that will help you pinpoint where you should focus. Make three lists. On the first list, write down all of the things you are good at — everything that you do well and that you have mastery over. On the next list, write down everything you enjoy — hobbies, special interests, games, TV shows, etc. Finally, list everything that gives you a sense of meaning and purpose. Now for the magic . . . find common elements across all three lists. That’s when you’ve discovered your HABU. That’s what you should focus on in the other 8 hours.

Don’t go for the “sexy” ones just because you think they’ll be the most exciting or have the most potential. Focus on those that feel right for you — those that mesh well with your skills, interests, and greater purpose.

Hey, Hot Shot! - One Hour Photo Project

Yay! Got some press on "Hey Hot Shot!"

See my work in this intriguing "One Hour Photo Project" on Friday May 21 between 2-3 PM.

(Nope, this is not the image that will be seen in the show. You'll have to be there to see it!)

Project creator, Adam Good and curators Chajana denHarder and Chandi Kelley accepted entries from artists all over the world, asking the selected exhibitors to promise that they never "reproduce, display, sell, or otherwise expose to the public this work after it is project...," which they add is fundamentally an act about giving up control—to allow work to exist and only exist for a designated slice of time.
The exhibit invites show-goers to take a risk, both on what they might arrive to see and the satisfaction they may derive both from their experience with the image and the experience of knowing that the image will not be shared with anyone but in that room. One is asked to observe without documenting and acknowledge without sharing, allowing the images—one by one—to take precedent.

There will be an opening on May 8th, featuring the work of over a hundred artists, coming together for a single exhibition.

Last week M took the kids to visit their grandparents in Pennsylvania so I could have a solo weekend of self-care, rest and much-needed reflection. I haven't had much opportunity for any of those things since my Dad died in January and I have been beset by health problems. So, I took myself out on a solo Sunday morning photoshoot at the Gettysburg
Battlefield. I had the entire cold and frosty panorama to myself, save for a lingering ghost or two. It was good to confront spirits and apparitions in broad daylight and find time to honor the artist who lives on in me.

Long time no me. After my father died last month. I have withdrawn myself deliberately from society while dealing with grief and my own health concerns and creative crises. The first few weeks were very difficult because all the massive blows came at once and left me feeling helpless, deflated and empty.

So many lovely people have emailed, called and sent thoughtful cards and gifts to which I have been unable to respond properly until now. I know people have been concerned for my well-being and wondering if I was "depressed." The good news is that I am not so much depressed as still, and not so much ill as exhausted. I have used the ensuing weeks to rest and reflect, and am now feeling more positive than ever about my life, because I am purposely choosing to use this time of "Sunyata" or empty fruitfulness to choose a new path for myself, different from the one I was on before this crossroads.

I am approaching this rite of passage thoughtfully as a humble student. How can I use these life lessons to better my one wild and brief life and how I can best use my time and talents to make the world a little better in the process? This is what I am now working through, quietly and solemnly, seeking to improve myself in mind, body and soul. I'll be around sporadically, (appointment with my surgeon on Monday) but I thank you for your positive energ and your patience as I withdraw myself for a time in order to devote myself to healing.

Went in for an MRI/MRCP this morning to find out why I have been feeling so sick the last few months. Hoping for the best.

It is 2010, right? I'd like to be looking forward, but my back is still stuck in 2009.

A week has passed and, 5 chiropractor visits later I am still down for the count with a twisted up back and ordered to be flat on my back for the rest of the week at least. It's ever-so-slooooowwwly getting better, but my chiro says, in all her 20 years of practice she has never witnessed a knot in the muscles quite as big and wicked as mine.
The words "softball" and "grapefruit" were bandied about. How's that for dandy imagery? It hurts in direct proportion to your level of repulsion and my own, trust me. Apparently my back thought it was responsible for holding the entire known universe together and now refuses to budge but for a millimeter at a time.

And the timing could not be worse, because I have deadlines and contracts and all sorts of things happening, not to mention 2 little kids who need their mother, but of course when is there ever a good time to be knocked off your feet?

So...greetings to you from my couch in my living room where I have been and will be for quite some time. I made this picture for you.

(and for my back as a reminder to just relax a little, hey buddy? Let go. Move on.)

Well, despite the otherwise awful week I am having beset by bad news on all sides and my Dad in the hospital, I DID get some good news this week.
